Refocusing Washington's Policy Lens on Iran

By Ali Safavi, Member of Iran's Parliament in Exile;
President of the Near East Policy Research

On a chilly October day in 1981, after returning home from the
University of Michigan campus, I answered a phone call. On the
other side of the line was my step mother from Iran. She rarely called
those days because of the reign of terror imposed by the regime some
five months earlier. In tears, she gave me the distressing news. My
older brother, Hossein, had been executed a week earlier.

Iraqi army besieges Iranian exile camp - residents

March 16, 2009 9:56am EDT

BAGHDAD, March 16 (Reuters) - Iraqi forces have
besieged a camp housing Iranian exiles in Iraq, residents
and a security official said, after the national security
adviser reiterated a vow to shut the place down.

A source at Iraq's Interior Ministry said Iraqi soldiers
surrounded Camp Ashraf on Thursday after residents
resisted an attempt to clear  them out of one building
inside it. The soldiers were blocking fuel and medicines
getting in, he said.

Peace movements always struggle with the balancing
act of wanting to engage enemies without appeasing
them. Peace activists don't want

war, but they also recognize that peace at any price can
be costly. In the case of Iran, these choices are
becoming painful and difficult.

Iraq's political refugees in limbo

By Saleh al-Mutlaq  |  April 23, 2008

THERE IS so much tragedy in Iraq that some stories
go underreported - eclipsed by other negative news.
This one requires attention: Inside Iraq, 20 kilometers
west of the Iranian border and 60 kilometers northeast
of Baghdad in Diyala province, stands Camp Ashraf
where members of the Iranian opposition - known as
the Mujahedin-e-Khalq - have lived for more than two
decades. Today, some 3,500 residents live in Ashraf.

"There is a chance that this wholly
indigenous movement, by virtue of
its own success, and entirely for
its own reasons, could bring about
an incredibly positive shift in the
global security environment...What
I hold to be essential is that we
must act...The Iranian regime is
facing pressure from within unlike
anything it's ever felt."

(From Remarks Rep. Gary
Ackerman; Chair, House
Subcommittee on the Middle East
and South Asia - Feb 03, 2010)
"Nothing contributes to the establishment
of calm, democracy and peace in Iraq than
intensifying the pattern of change in Iran.
The Iranian people are demanding change.
Despite absolute repression inside the
country, several thousand anti-
government protests have been staged
nationwide by students with the
assistance of the Resistance's network
inside Iran. The chants have been "death
to the dictator.“ The way to confront the
mullahs is neither appeasement nor a
foreign military intervention. Democratic
change by the Iranian people and their
resistance is the only viable option...."
